The Uganda Local Government Workers Union has given the government three weeks to arrange a direct meeting with the President, warning that failure to act could trigger a nationwide strike. Workers say their concerns over delayed salary enhancements have been ignored for too long, and only the President can resolve the issue.

Union leaders, National Chairperson Emmanuel Gidudu and General Secretary Hassan Mudiba, explained that previous meetings with government officials yielded no results, stressing that ministers alone cannot approve the salary changes.

“We need to meet the President directly because our voices are not being heard,” the leaders said, adding that only his decision can finally deliver the long-awaited salary enhancements.

Many local government employees report struggling with the rising cost of living. They argue that fair pay is overdue and vital for maintaining morale and ensuring essential services like health, education, and administration continue running effectively.

The union has formally written to the responsible minister, warning that if a meeting is not arranged within three weeks, they will mobilize workers nationwide to strike, potentially disrupting key services in districts across Uganda.

Observers say the next few weeks are crucial. The government must decide whether to engage directly with the workers, while the union must keep its members united and ready. All eyes are now on whether dialogue with the President will happen or if a strike will bring local services to a halt.
