On Wednesday morning, a serious helicopter crash took place near Mogadishu International Airport in Somalia. Around 7:30 am, a Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mi-24 helicopter crashed just 200 meters east of the North Ramp while it was on a routine combat escort mission. The aircraft’s tail number was AUO-015.

There were eight people on board, including six crew members. Sadly, five UPDF soldiers died in the crash. The three survivors — the pilot, co-pilot, and flight engineer — were badly injured. They suffered serious burns and were quickly taken to AUSSOM Sector 1 Level II Hospital for emergency treatment.

The crash was even more dangerous because the helicopter was carrying weapons and ammunition. These exploded on impact, causing a large fire and damaging buildings near the crash site. The explosion also injured three civilians who were close by. They were also rushed to the same hospital for medical care.

Emergency teams acted quickly to manage the situation. Firefighters from Mogadishu International Airport, the United Nations, and AUSSOM’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team all worked together. They helped put out the fire, cleared the wreckage, and supported the rescue of those injured.

Authorities have started an official investigation to find out what caused the crash. The UPDF and its partners say they are committed to understanding what happened so they can prevent such a tragedy in the future.

This heartbreaking event is a reminder of the dangers faced by soldiers in the line of duty. We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the five fallen soldiers. We also wish the injured crew and civilians a full and speedy recovery. May those who lost their lives rest in peace.
