On the morning of March 17, 2017, Uganda was shaken by devastating news. Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Andrew Felix Kaweesi was gunned down just outside his home in Kulambiro, a suburb of Kampala.

Kaweesi was in his vehicle alongside his driver and bodyguard when unknown assailants opened fire. All three men were killed instantly in a hail of bullets. The attack was swift, brutal, and left the country in shock. It appeared to be a carefully planned operation carried out by professionals who knew exactly what they were doing.

In the aftermath, the government launched a major crackdown, arresting more than 40 individuals. Some were charged with murder and terrorism. However, years later, most of those suspects have not been tried. Several were released on bail and have since vanished, while a few continue to face slow-moving court proceedings.

Many Ugandans believe that Kaweesi’s assassination was not the work of ordinary criminals. The precision and firepower used in the attack—guns typically issued to elite security forces—fueled suspicions of an inside job. It raised serious concerns about potential involvement from within the very institutions meant to protect him.

Multiple security agencies launched investigations. Evidence included phone records and testimonies suggesting suspicious meetings and movements before the killing. Some witnesses claimed they were hired to monitor Kaweesi or report on his activities. There were even reports that high-ranking officers were under scrutiny. One prominent former police chief was arrested and interrogated, but was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.

Despite these investigations, the masterminds behind the assassination remain unidentified. Some suspects have disappeared without a trace; others have languished in detention for years without trial. The families of Kaweesi, his driver, and his bodyguard are still waiting for justice.

Today, Kaweesi’s murder remains one of Uganda’s most troubling unsolved crimes. For many, it symbolizes a deeper problem—one of unanswered questions, official silence, and a justice system that appears stalled. Nearly a decade later, the truth about who killed Andrew Felix Kaweesi, and why, remains a painful and unresolved mystery.
