“During The War, We Accommodated Museveni’s Mother For Two & Half years” Angry Winnie Besigye Exposes Museveni

On February 19, 2025, the High Court in Kampala adjourned its decision regarding the detention of Dr. Kizza Besigye, his aide Obeid Lutale, and their lawyer Eron Kiiza, who have been in custody since November 2024. Their legal team had filed a habeas corpus petition to challenge the legality of their detention. During the hearing, High Court Judge Douglas Karekona Singiza stated that he would deliver his decision by February 25, 2025.
Despite hearing arguments from both Besigye’s lawyers and the Attorney General’s representatives, the judge declined to issue an interim order for Besigye’s release, despite his urgent medical needs. The judge suggested that Besigye and Lutale be returned to jail while the legal proceedings continued, citing the complexity of the case.
Following the court session, National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) and Dr. Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, expressed their disappointment with the judicial process. Kyagulanyi accused the government of politically persecuting Besigye, stating, “We’re not going to stop. We gave the regime 48 hours to release Dr. Besigye because we want him alive. They are trying to kill him.”
Byanyima also shared her frustration, expressing her devastation at the court’s decision. “I came here expecting to take Dr. Kizza Besigye home today. I’m devastated but I’m not surprised. Besigye is a captive. He was kidnapped, and he’s in captivity as we all are,” she said. She strongly condemned President Museveni and his son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for their actions and criticized the judge’s decision to send her husband back to jail as his health deteriorates. “Shame on this judge for sending my husband back to jail when his health is deteriorating fast. But it’s all on President Museveni and his son,” Byanyima added.
During a prayer session at the NUP headquarters, Byanyima revealed a personal connection between her family and Museveni’s mother, recalling how, during the early days of the National Resistance Army (NRA) war, her father had offered refuge to Museveni’s mother when others were too afraid. “When Museveni was in the bush, we accommodated his mother for two and a half years. When everyone else feared to bring her closer, my father allowed her in and gave her refuge,” she shared. Byanyima expressed a sense of deep betrayal given the current treatment of her husband by the government.
Byanyima further criticized President Museveni’s leadership, calling him a “narcissist” and accusing him of losing his humanity. “When you look at what he’s doing to my husband today, it’s assurance that he can’t change. He’s a narcissist, desperate, paranoid, and has lost his humanity. We must push him away by force,” she concluded.
