Juma Wasswa Balunywa (JBW) Candidature Hangs In Balance As Retake Is Confirmed At MUBS, Voters Left Disappointed
The current atmosphere at Makerere University Business School (MUBS) is charged with both anticipation and dispute as the Guild Presidential election for the 2024-2025 academic session gains momentum.
Among the contenders seeking the esteemed position is Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior, the offspring of former MUBS Principal, Professor Wasswa Balunywa, whose term concluded on May 31, 2023.Nevertheless, uncertainty clouds Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s qualification to run for the Guild President role.
A covert inquiry by Campus Bee has uncovered that JWB faced a retake in computing mathematics during his second year of study, a fact confirmed by sources within MUBS.According to the MUBS Guild constitution, candidates for the Guild President or Guild Parliament (GRC) posts must have maintained regular academic progress throughout their semesters and should not have undergone any retakes.
Despite this stipulation, Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior has been actively campaigning for the presidency using various platforms such as social media, on-campus events, and interactions at students’ residences.
This development has stirred skepticism among the student populace, raising concerns about the motives behind Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s campaign.
The Dean of Students’ office, tasked with supervising guild affairs, has disseminated guidelines for candidates, stressing the importance of adherence to regulations. However, reports suggest the existence of a faction on campus purportedly advocating for Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s candidacy as an independent contender, notwithstanding the potential breach of the guild constitution.
Allegedly, the group aims to expose the current institution leadership and incite unrest, possibly through student demonstrations, if Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior is not endorsed. In reaction to these developments, numerous students have expressed concerns about upholding the university’s regulations and preserving tranquility within the institution.
“We are governed by rules as students,” noted one student.
“Anyone flouting them will be held personally accountable. MUBS is known for its peaceful environment, and we will not be manipulated into causing turmoil for personal interests.”
As the race for Guild Presidency intensifies, all eyes are on MUBS to observe the unfolding events and whether Juma Wasswa Balunywa Junior’s candidacy will progress amid the controversy over his eligibility.
Both the university administration and student body remain vigilant, underscoring the significance of impartial elections and adherence to established protocols.
