Kifeesi Sobi Profiled: The Dead Criminal Used by Top Government Officials in Deadly Missions – His Scaring Criminal Record
The narrative of former Kifeesi gang leader, Sserunjogi Paddy Sobbi, unfolds as a tale of both ascent and descent. Hailing from Kitintale, Sobbi harbored an ambition to be the most formidable and feared individual.
His moniker, derived from the movie ‘Escape from Sobibor,’ evolved into the abbreviated Sobbi.Early on, Sobbi’s fascination with firearms surfaced, acquiring his initial weapon at the tender age of 10. By 12, he engaged in looting at Silver Springs, firing his first shot at 13 during a coffee heist in Luzira at Portbell.
Sobbi, confessing to robbing passengers using his gun, pilfered from UTC buses and taxis. From 1992 to 1998, Sobbi directed passengers at Burton Street in Kampala, occasionally working as a conductor, with a stint in 1995 leading to his arrest for illegal firearm possession. Despite facing charges, he claimed nonresponsibility and endured four years of remand at Luzira Upper Prison, with subsequent transfers to Mobuku, Rwimi, Katojjo, and Ibuga.
Within three months of completing his sentence, Sobbi’s court appeal was accepted, yet he opted to fulfill his punishment. Post-release in 1999, Sobbi resumed criminal pursuits, targeting forex bureaus and banks. His criminal journey met a harsh reality when he was shot in the stomach and leg during a mission.
In 2015, after years in prison, Sobbi pledged to forsake criminality, asserting a transformation into a born-again Christian. Advocating for a similar change in his associates, he collaborated with authorities to apprehend criminals in Kampala.Sobi, previously associated with criminal activities and the infamous Kifeesi gang terrorizing Kampala, made a shocking confession in 2017, admitting his involvement in numerous crimes.
Despite claims of transitioning into a police informant during Gen Edward Kale Kayihura’s tenure as Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sobi continued his controversial activities, allegedly commanding ‘safe houses’ in Kyengera in Wakiso, and Kalangala district and allegedly being hired for land grabbing missions.Former informant, Alex Odwori, who was subjected to inhumane treatment at Kalangala islands under Sobi’s command was among those who petitioned parliament and President Museveni seeking intervention because many people were ‘rotting incommunicado.’
Subsequently, Sobbi ventured into land reclamation, aiding individuals in recovering unlawfully seized properties. Unfortunately, his life met a tragic end during a violent altercation, leading to his untimely demise and injuries to his colleagues.
Preparations for Sobbi’s burial are currently underway, ensuring a respectful farewell befitting his complex journey.
