The 2023 UACE results have been unveiled today on Thursday, March 7, at State House Nakasero.

Janet Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports, officiated the release event, as announced by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Chairperson, Prof. Celestino Obua. Prof. Obua highlighted the increasing trend in Science entries at UÁCE, albeit still lower than Humanities.

He commended the improved performance of candidates, particularly those achieving 3 Principal passes, with females outperforming males at all levels and exhibiting a lower failure rate. However, he noted a disparity in the percentage of female candidates offering Mathematics and Science combinations, despite their strong performance in these subjects.

“Honourable Minister the performance of the candidates has improved especially at the upper level of candidates obtaining 3 Principal passes. We note that, once again. female candidates have performed better, Proportionally, than the males at all levels and have shown a lower failure rate.”

“Even at individual subiect levels, they have shown a better performance. However, we continue to see a low percentage of female candidates at this level offering Mathematics and Science combinations. The paradox, Honourable Minister. is that the girls who offer STEM subjects perform well, if not better than the boys. Why then do the girls shy away from these subjects?”

Dan Odongo, the Executive Director of UNEB, reported that there was a notable increase in the number of candidates registering for the 2023 UACE examination compared to the previous year.

In 2023, a total of 110,553 candidates registered from 2,102 centres, whereas in 2022, there were 97,890 candidates from 1,969 centres, indicating a 12.9% increase. Among these candidates, 42.7% were females and 57.3% were males.

The number of candidates who appeared for the examination also increased from 96,557 in 2022 to 109,488 in 2023, representing a 13.4% increase. Of these, 42.8% were females and 57.2% were males.

Despite the increase in overall numbers, the proportion of female candidates remains consistently lower than that of males at the UACE level.
