Norbert Mao, Uganda’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, tied the knot with Beatrice Kayanja on June 1, 2024, in a lavish ceremony at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Gulu City. The wedding was officiated by Archbishop John Baptist Odama and attended by several high-profile figures, including Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo.

Beatrice Kayanja is a prominent figure in Ugandan politics and public service. She formerly served as a research assistant for the Democratic Party (DP), where Mao holds the position of president. In 2020, she contested the Kampala Capital City Authority Lord Mayorship but encountered setbacks related to citizenship verification issues.

The couple’s journey to marriage has been closely followed by the public, featuring both traditional and formal ceremonies. Earlier this year, they held a “kukyala,” a traditional Buganda introduction ceremony, at Beatrice’s family home, marking a significant milestone in their relationship.

Both Mao and Beatrice have had previous marriages. Beatrice was formerly married to a UK-based spouse, a union that ended in separation. Mao’s earlier marriage to Naomi Achieng Adong, with whom he shares three children, ended in divorce in 2019.

Their wedding signifies a new chapter for the couple, celebrated by many across the nation.
