How I Survived a Near-Deadly Boda Boda Accident While Racing Against Curfew

My name is Gilbert, and I live in Githurai 44. On weekdays, I work as a matatu conductor, but over the weekends, I take my cousin’s boda boda and do deliveries. It’s my way of earning some extra money to support my younger brother’s education. Life in Nairobi is not for the faint-hearted—if you don’t hustle smart, you’ll go to bed hungry.

In early 2023, I began getting worried by the rising number of accidents. It became almost routine to hear that someone had been knocked down while riding. Sometimes the fault lay with reckless drivers; other times, it was riders trying to outrun the police or beat the curfew. I lost two close friends that way. Both died on the spot.

I started getting nervous. Every time I hopped onto the boda for a delivery, I’d feel a tight knot in my chest. One week, I narrowly escaped two accidents in a single day.
