Lawyer and governance advocate Godber Tumushabe has ignited a new debate regarding the imprisonment of Advocate Eron Kiiza. In a statement shared on X, Tumushabe questioned Uganda Law Society (ULS) President Isaac Ssemakadde about reports suggesting he visited Kiiza in Kitalya Prison and allegedly pressured him to apologize to General Muhoozi Kainerugaba in exchange for his release. Tumushabe specifically asked Ssemakadde if there was any truth to the claims and inquired about the nature of what Kiiza would need to apologize for.

The post has fueled further scrutiny over the handling of Kiiza’s case, which has been a topic of controversy since Kiiza, a lawyer for opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, was jailed for contempt of court following his actions at a military court martial. Reports of behind-the-scenes negotiations regarding Kiiza’s potential release have added to the controversy, with critics accusing influential figures of undermining justice and exerting pressure on legal professionals.

Tumushabe’s remarks highlight ongoing concerns about the intersection of political influence, legal independence, and human rights within Uganda’s judicial system. The situation has continued to attract significant public attention, with growing calls for greater transparency and accountability in the handling of such cases.
