The salary structure for Uganda Police Force and Uganda Prisons Services for the current financial year (FY 2024-2025) indicates disparities between the highest and the lowest paid officers in uniform.
The disparities are worsened by the discriminative enhancements and preference for scientists, which have left behind officers with training in humanities.
The salary structure includes legal, scientists, professional and general category except health professionals and aviation for FY 2024-2025.
An Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) or Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons (administrative) earns a little over Shs7m (Shs 7,070,698 to be exact) while An Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) or Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons (sciences) get Shs 12.75m every month.
An Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) or Assistant Commissioner General of Prisons (legal) earns Shs 8,762,800 million.
A Senior Commissioner of Police or Prisons who is a scientist earns Shs 11.9 million every month, a Senior Commissioner of Police or Prisons (administrative) Shs 6,806,632 million, and a Senior Commissioner of Police or Prisons (legal) Shs 8,027,400.
At the bottom of the salary structure is a police constable, prison warder or wardress who earn Shs 535,223 every month.
A lance corporal earns Shs 560,033.
It should be remembered that months ago, Museveni’s government doubled the salaries of top police and prisons officers but internal affairs minister Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, who is in charge of police, has expressed his disappointment, saying his heart still bleeds for police officers over salaries and conditions.
