BREAKING NEWS!! More Than 20 UPDF Soldiers Mercilessly Killed In Somalia After Deadly Ambush, Al-Shabaab Militants Reveal
At least 20 Ugandan soldiers are feared dead and more than 30 others injured following a deadly ambush by Al-Shabaab militants in Barire, a strategically located town southwest of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), had been advancing toward Barire as part of a broader offensive supported by U.S. and Turkish drone strikes.
According to Somali media reports and a statement released by Al-Shabaab on Friday, August 2, the militant group ambushed the Ugandan contingent shortly after they entered the town.
The attack reportedly destroyed five armored vehicles and resulted in intense fighting that lasted several hours.
Facing heavy casualties and equipment losses, the Ugandan forces were reportedly forced to withdraw.
Independent sources, including the Military Observer open-source intelligence account, have corroborated reports of significant casualties and confirmed the loss of military hardware, adding weight to Al-Shabaab’s claims. However, no official statements have been released by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) or Somali government officials.
Barire has been under Al-Shabaab control since March and is considered a key logistical corridor linking Mogadishu to southern Somalia.
Military analysts caution that unless key towns such as Barire, Sabiid, and Awdhegle are secured, the capital could face escalating threats from militant incursions.
