Ciro Quispe López, 51, the bishop of Juli, Peru, has resigned following allegations that he maintained 17 secret mistresses. The scandal emerged after his cleaning lady discovered compromising material and reported it to the Church.
The Vatican launched an investigation after reports surfaced that some of the women nearly came to blows over López’s affairs. Peruvian journalist Paola Ugaz explained, “A nun who was one of Quispe’s lovers was jealous of a lawyer the bishop was also seeing and sent information about his affairs to a third lover, who then confronted the lawyer.” Ugaz described the situation as a “real soap opera” while noting the serious abuse of power involved, with many women reportedly too intimidated to speak out.
