“It’s Only Evil People Dragging Me Into Joan Kagezi’s Murder, My Hands Are Clean” Gen Kale Kayihura Clears His Name

Former police chief General Kale Kayihura has come out strongly to deny any involvement in the murder of senior prosecutor Joan Kagezi, who was assassinated in 2015. Kayihura, who served as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) at the time, called the allegations against him false, dangerous, and spread by people with bad intentions.
The accusations resurfaced after the recent arrest of his former ally, SSP Nixon Agasirwe, who once worked under Kayihura in the Police Special Operations Unit. Agasirwe was arrested in connection with the murder after a key prosecution witness, Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka, testified in court. Kisekka, a former UPDF soldier, told the International Crimes Division that a man called “Nick” gave him and others the orders to kill Kagezi. He also confessed that they were each paid 500,000 shillings for the act.
Following this, some people started linking Kayihura to the crime. But the former police boss has strongly pushed back, saying these claims are baseless and unfair. In an interview on NBS Faceoff, Kayihura said he was close to Joan Kagezi and her death deeply shocked him.
“Joan was our main legal advisor in many investigations. Her murder was a big loss, and I took it personally. I was close to her and her family,” Kayihura said. He revealed that in 2023, Kagezi’s children even helped organize his daughter’s wedding. “That shows you how close I am to the family. The children are like my own,” he added.
He blamed the accusations on political propaganda, saying, “Whoever is pushing this narrative is simply evil.”
Kayihura’s response has come at a time when the public is once again demanding answers in the long-unsolved case. Joan Kagezi was gunned down in front of her children in Kampala as she drove home, and for years, her killers have not been fully brought to justice.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Gen Kayihura has recently taken up a new job, although more details about this role are yet to be released to the public.
As investigations continue, Kayihura insists his name is clean and warns those spreading lies that truth will always prevail.
