“We Didn’t Do Anything, I Only Went To His Hotel Room For A Medical Consultation,” Says Woman Last Seen With Dr. Spire Kiggundu

The circumstances surrounding the sudden death of prominent gynecologist Dr. John Spire Kiggundu remain unclear, as new developments continue to emerge. The woman identified as the last person to see him alive, Eva Mbabazi, has spoken out for the first time since her arrest.
Mbabazi, believed to be in her early 20s, was captured on CCTV entering and later leaving Dr. Kiggundu’s room at Dream Guest House in Lubowa on the evening of June 21, 2025. The doctor, who checked in at approximately 5:45 PM, was discovered dead in his room less than an hour later.
Following her identification, Mbabazi was taken into custody by the Kampala Metropolitan Police. Through her legal representative, she has denied any wrongdoing, explaining that her visit was strictly professional. “I went to his room for a medical consultation. It was a brief discussion, and I was not aware he was unwell,” her statement read.
Authorities have confirmed that she has fully cooperated with the investigation. Her statement has been submitted to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which is currently reviewing the case to determine whether there is any basis for formal charges.
Preliminary medical reports indicate that Dr. Kiggundu may have suffered a heart attack. However, investigators continue to examine all possibilities, including the potential for foul play, as they await conclusive forensic results.
The case has sparked widespread public interest and speculation, prompting calls for caution. Dr. Kiggundu’s brother, human rights activist Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, urged the public not to rush to judgment. “Let the investigation take its course. We need truth, not assumptions,” he said.
Dr. Kiggundu was widely respected for his contributions to women’s health and was the founder of Henrob Hospital. His unexpected passing has left the medical community and many Ugandans in mourning.
As the investigation moves forward, Mbabazi’s testimony has added both clarity and further questions. The truth about Dr. Kiggundu’s final moments now rests with the investigators and legal authorities overseeing the case.
