President Museveni Gears Up For 2026 Election , Launches NRM Register Update – Muhoozi Camp Boycotts Event
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, also the party chairman, has initiated the process to update the NRM register in line with the ruling party’s electoral plans for the 2026 election.
After the launch, Museveni emphasized the importance of this exercise in determining the party’s supporter base.
“This is a good nucleus. Each book is sent back to the village and people check. People are free to go and check and if there is somebody missing, they can be added.” President Museveni Said
Museveni highlighted the responsibility of party leaders to mobilize Ugandans to support the NRM, stressing the need for them to understand the party’s principles thoroughly.
“To effectively mobilize, leaders must comprehend these principles, which diagnose Uganda’s problems and offer solutions. Leaders must delve deep into these principles, unlike followers who require only a summary. Mobilization efforts must resonate with the core principles of the NRM.”
He urged NRM leaders to understand the country’s challenges deeply to effectively mobilize and sensitize the public.NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, affirmed that this exercise prepares the party for the 2026 general election and reiterated the call for President Museveni to run again in 2026.
“As a party, we are committed to ensuring your legacy continues, and we implore you to stand in 2026. Every district is submitting a memorandum urging you to offer yourself in 2026.”
Roadmap
According to Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, the roadmap will commence with the display and update of the NRM register in every village nationwide between March 13 and 17, 2024. On March 17, all villages will hold barazas for approval by the NRM village executive committee and village registrar, providing an opportunity for members to verify their details. Uganda comprises of 72,000 villages.
Subsequently, between March 19 and 24, the party will call for expressions of interest and nominate candidates for village and cell-level party structures. Campaigns will be organized in every village between March 25 and 26.
On March 27, polling and announcement of results for village-level party structures will occur, followed by the compilation of registers at parish level starting April 5, and polling of party structures at sub-county and town council levels on April 12. The process will proceed to municipal and city division levels on April 16, district and city levels on April 19, and compilation of registers and submission of final results to the party secretariat between April 20 and 30.
Dr. Tanga Odoi noted that details regarding the selection of NRM presidential and parliamentary flagbearers, LC5 chairpersons, municipal mayors, and others will be disclosed later.
The event was attended by members of the party’s Central Executive Committee, including First Vice Chairperson Al Haji Moses Kigongo, Second Vice Chairperson Rebecca Kadaga, and other senior party officials.
