Uganda Parliament Speaker Anita Among has affirmed that the Parliament does not regret passing the Anti-Homosexuality law, despite the recent travel restrictions imposed on legislators who supported the controversial legislation.Among expressed her satisfaction with President Museveni signing the bill into law, thanking him for it during a plenary session.

She emphasized Parliament’s commitment to protecting families, children’s rights, and Uganda as a whole. In response to the cancellation of visas for 348 MPs involved in the law’s enactment, Among stated, “My visa was cancelled, have I died? As I have said, so long as you don’t cancel the visa to Bukedea and Buyende, I have my home. I will go there.”

Lawmakers argue that the Anti-Homosexuality Act aims to safeguard African traditional marriage and culture. The law imposes severe penalties, including 20 years in jail for engaging in homosexuality and the death penalty for aggravated homosexuality involving minors or vulnerable groups.

President Museveni, reacting to Washington’s actions, warned against underestimating African freedom fighters and criticized the Western pressure. Among reassured MPs banned from traveling to the U.S., stating they have all they need in Uganda.

Asuman Basalirwa, the bill’s mover, refuted claims of MPs being used by Museveni, acknowledging external pressures promoting homosexuality. Jonathan Ebwalu affirmed his people’s support for the law, emphasizing MPs’ determination to protect it despite foreign pressure.
