Internal Affairs Minister, Maj Gen RTD Kahinda Otafiire has publicly expressed his opposition to Muhoozi’s presidential ambitions.

Otafiire’s supporters, including an NRM youth group in Mitooma, earlier this month held a press conference, denouncing plans to hold a Baraza in the area. The Minister’s supporters said the Baraza would not add value to their district.

“We will not allow Mitooma District to be used by self-seekers in the MK camp. Mitooma is not a market to be used by the MK group,” said Bob Abemigisha.

It is understood MK Movement’s leaders appealed to President Museveni who later authorized the MK Movement to go ahead with the Baraza. Gen. Muhoozi has been holding Barazas in different parts of the country. His office said the barazas allow Muhoozi to listen to people’s challenges and find solutions to them.

In Northern Uganda, Muhoozi attended a Baraza where families complained of repetitive attacks by cattle rustlers. Muhoozi responded by ordering more deployment of security personnel in the area.Otafiire, 73, belongs to the core of the old NRA guard that brought President Museveni to power by the force of arms in 1986. Insiders say this group fears the rise of Gen Muhoozi as he would clip their wings by relieving them of their positions in a government restructuring exercise.

Last year, Gen Salim Saleh tried to reconcile Gen Muhoozi and Otafiire in vain.Otafiire has continued to criticize Muhoozi in public fora.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa last weekend urged the youth to avoid the politics of division.

“Don’t allow yourself to appear in controversial videos by self-seekers because such acts will injure your reputation,” said Tayebwa.

He also said “the incredible display of affection towards my dear brother Gen Muhoozi yesterday truly exceeded all expectations. As a generation, it is crucial that we prioritize wealth creation and provide opportunities for our young people to thrive in the money economy.”

Last year Kahinda Otafiire warned Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba against any further remarks against him.For some time, the two generals have been trading words. Otafiire insists that President Yoweri Museveni will extend his rule beyond 2026 while Muhoozi and those in support of his bid think it is the 48-year-old’s turn to occupy State House.

Speaking on CBS Radio recently, Otafiire said: “For me, i feel okay when people like Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the Party President, National Unity Platform – NUP) are making such political statements because i know that there is no law that prevents them from doing so but as an army officer that’s unacceptable.”

Otafiire insisted that he is a fighter who cannot be threatened by Gen Muhoozi. Last year, Gen Muhoozi through his twitter handle threatened to crash Gen Otafiire, teaching him a lesson. But Otafiire says that they went to the bush in 1980 to fight against impunity and that it is regrettable that the four-star general is spewing impunity. He explained that Gen. Muhoozi is legally not allowed to comment on partisan politics as he is doing and he (Muhoozi) has to be brought to book.

He blasted Gen Muhoozi for accusing them (old guards) of wanting to continue staying in power. He said that Gen Muhoozi’s actions of undermining the institutions such as the army are tarnishing the image of his father and those who have spent their entire lives working hard to see a peaceful Uganda with law-abiding citizens.

“I have no problem with him, first of all he is still in the army and what he is doing is against the law. As a serving army officer, he is not allowed to say such things. Sincerely someone who is not law abiding, how could follow him? What example is he giving other officers?” the Minister wondered.

Gen Otafiire further noted that he does not hold any grudge against the former Commander of UPDF Land Forces but he is speaking as one of the few people against the First Son’s impunity and misuse of State institutions such as the army.

According to Otafiire, Muhoozi is equally harassing his own father – Museveni. He boasted that the NRM party is ready to crash anyone against Museveni’s continued rule, even if it is Museveni’s family member.Hu
