“Being Museveni’s Son Doesn’t Make You Fit To Become Uganda’s President” Minister Otafiire Mocks Muhoozi Again

Museveni’s bush war hero and outspoken Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, has once again criticized and raised concerns about Muhoozi’s aspirations for Uganda’s presidency.
In a video shared by NBS Tv on social media, Otafiire expressed skepticism about Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s ability to lead Uganda, emphasizing the importance of proving competence independent of his familial ties to Museveni.
Otafiire, who has previously voiced doubts about a Muhoozi presidency, reiterated the need for democratic leadership rather than hereditary succession, emphasizing the principles they fought for 40 years ago.
“Because if you say the son should take over from the father, his son will also want to take over from his grand father, then there will be sultan number one, Sultan number two and then the whole essence of the democracy for which we fought for will be lost. Let there be fair competition including Gen Muhoozi. Let him prove to Ugandans that he’s capable not as Museveni’s son but as he Muhoozi that he’s competent to manage a country, i have nothing against him….’-says Otafiire.
Earlier this month, Otafiire addressed concerns about his sentiments towards Muhoozi, clarifying in a viral video that he does not harbor hatred towards him. Instead, he opposes Muhoozi’s potential succession to his father’s position when Museveni eventually steps down or if circumstances force him to relinquish power after nearly four decades of rule.
Otafiire clarified that his opposition to Muhoozi’s presidency stems from concerns about dynastic rule rather than personal animosity. He emphasized his openness to dialogue about the issue.
“I hear people say Kahinda hates Museveni’s son, he hates Muhoozi Kainerugaba. I don’t hate Kainerugaba as a person, I don’t want him as a president. there is a difference. I have no problem with Kainerugaba as Museveni’s son but Kainerugaba the president of Uganda, i don’t support that. I’m very open on that one.”-said Otafiire.
His remarks come as Muhoozi recently rebranded his movement and amid discussions within the ruling party about succession plans.Otafiire is among several NRM veterans who have been vocal about the need for leadership transition.
Gen Elly Tumwine, another bush war hero, had similarly urged Museveni to prepare for succession before his passing in 2022.The prospect of a Muhoozi presidency also faces opposition from figures like Gen David Ssejusa, who retired from the army after advocating for change within the UPDF.
