Main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine has reacted to a decision by the US government to the addition of Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) commissioner general Johnson Byabashaija on the list of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) List.

Byabashaija was among the 20 people the US treasury department sanctioned over their role in human rights violations and in undermining democracy.Byabashaija’s ‘sins’ also relate to forceful anal examination of homosexuals detained in Ugandan prisons.

Homosexuality is a crime in Uganda where Parliament passed a bill banning LGBTQI practices.Reacting to Byabashaija’s sanctions, the singer-turned-politician was convinced that the sanctions against Byabashaija are a response to the cries by Ugandan people suffering at the hands of highhanded state officials.

“We welcome the decision of the US Government to sanction Gen. Museveni’s officials who have engaged in gross human rights violations, including torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings,” he wrote.

“We’re glad that the cry of the people of Uganda is being heard by the world.”

Bobi Wine reminded all those engaged in human rights violations on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni that there will be consequences. The politician also vowed to keep exposing Uganda’s state of human rights and democracy to the world.

“The travel restrictions as well as sanctions under the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) are a good reminder that there will be consequences to those who abuse rights with impunity- especially now that Uganda’s institutions have been captured and are unable to hold them to account,” he noted.

“We shall not stop demanding that the world sees Uganda’s criminal regime for what it is.”

Bobi Wine was in recent days under criticism for changing his mind on homosexuality after being allowed to enter the UK for the first time in about 10 years.
