“Bobi Wine Should Tell Us Why Gays Fund Our NUP Party, His Luxurious Trips , Fashion And Tell Us If He Supports Homosexuality” NUP MP Petitions NUP
Masaka City Kimaanya Kabonera Division: Dr. Abed Bwanika has petitioned the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP), calling for a clear and decisive stance on LGBT+Q issues.
The petition, received by NUP Eastern Region Vice President John Baptist Nambeshe, addresses concerns about the party’s perceived lack of clarity on LGBT+Q rights. Dr. Bwanika stressed the urgency of the matter, noting widespread fears among the public regarding the NUP’s alleged support for homosexuality.
He pointed to certain incidents that contributed to these concerns, including statements made by NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, in interviews on international media platforms.
A particularly controversial moment arose from Kyagulanyi’s interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation in December 2023, in which he appeared to defend LGBT+Q rights despite the existence of an anti-homosexuality law and the Ugandan Penal Code.
“We firmly believe in the human rights of all Ugandans,” said Dr. Bwanika quoted in the interview.
Dr. Bwanika also expressed suspicions about Kyagulanyi’s alleged ties to international LGBT+Q activists and patrons such as Reverend Jesse Jackson and US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. He mentioned instances where Kyagulanyi’s outfit appeared to be in line with LGBT+Q fashion trends, such as wearing a “flared dress and purple colors” during the BAFTA awards ceremony in London, which raised questions within the party.
Dr. Bwanika expressed concern about possible financial support of the NUP from LGBT+Q organizations and suggested that this may have influenced leadership decisions, including the dismissal of former opposition leader Mathias Mpuuga due to his different stance on LGBT+Q issues.
Dr. Bwanika called for an immediate meeting of a legitimate body within the NUP to clarify the party’s position on LGBT+Q rights. He stressed the importance of transparency in addressing the concerns of Ugandans, especially parents who are concerned about the influence of such issues on their children within the party.
The petition was also forwarded to key figures within the NUP leadership including Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, party president, and Joel Bisekezi Senyonyi, opposition leader and party spokesperson, among others.
In 2023, in an interview with the international broadcaster BBC, Kyagulanyi argued that the anti-homosexuality law, which was supported by over 90% of members of parliament, was passed not in the interests of Ugandans, but as a tool of oppression. The opposition. Kyagulanyi appeared on the BBC while in London after being given a ten-year visa ban for his anti-gay lyrics.
Bobi Wine was banned from entering the UK by the Home Office for posting anti-gay texts in 2014 in which he urged the public to “shoot all the Battymen”. When asked to clarify his position on LGBT+Q rights, Kyagulanyi said he has grown and changed and strives to be “known as a leader who is respectful and inclusive of all.””
He further claimed that Museveni deliberately sponsored the law not to protect the interests of the people of Uganda but to attack the opposition. When asked why his NUP MPs voted for the bill as a whole, Kyagulanyi admitted: “Of course I have MPs in my party who work with General Museveni.”
However, he did not disclose the identities of the MPs who were with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The BBC presenter pressed further, asking whether Kyagulanyi would repeal the anti-homosexuality law if elected president of Uganda, to which he replied: “I would be very careful because I know it was largely aimed at the opposition , mainly to myself.” .
Kyagulanyi appears torn between projecting an image as a liberal leader in the Western societies where most of his donors are based and maintaining political support among his predominantly conservative compatriots.
