Bobi Wine Warns Human Rights Commission Boss Mariam Wangadya: You’re Next on the International Sanctions List

Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has issued a stern warning to Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) chairperson Mariam Wangadya, cautioning her that she may face international sanctions for her alleged role in human rights violations.
This warning comes after a heated exchange between the two during a UHRC tribunal hearing on Monday, which resulted in Kyagulanyi withdrawing his case in protest.
Speaking at the NUP party headquarters in Kampala on Thursday, Kyagulanyi accused Wangadya of attempting to silence him and deny him a fair hearing, prompting him to withdraw his case. He claimed that Wangadya had shut him down before he could even speak, and that the commission had delayed justice for five years.
“You, too ,will be sanctioned like your bosses,” Bobi Wine Warned.
“Before I could say five words, she shut me down,” he said.
Kyagulanyi had been allowed to speak despite having his lawyer, George Musisi, present, but was warned to abide by the tribunal’s rules or face expulsion. When he persisted, he was asked to leave, and in response, he declared his case withdrawn.
Kyagulanyi’s threat to lobby for international sanctions against Wangadya comes just weeks after the UK government imposed sanctions on the Speaker of Parliament and a former Karamoja Affairs minister, which NUP claimed to have lobbied for.
Kyagulanyi had initially appealed to UHRC after his music concerts were banned during the People Power Movement ahead of the 2021 general elections. He has consistently accused UHRC of being partisan, which the commission denies.Kyagulanyi’s warning to Wangadya is a clear indication that he will not back down in his pursuit of justice and accountability.
His statement, “You too will be sanctioned like your bosses,” sends a strong message that those in power will be held accountable for their actions. As the political landscape in Uganda continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this warning will play out and what implications it may have for Wangadya and the UHRC.
