Dont Waste Time!! Besigye Called To Join NUP & Get Under Bobi Wine’s Leadership
Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, a former presidential candidate, has been urged to focus on creating a coalition between his “People’s Government” and the main opposition force, the National Unity Platform (NUP), rather than on trying to retake the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
There are now worries that it might be too late to save the Najjanankumbi-based party amid the internal deadlock that is dissolving.Former Kawempe North congressman and NUP member Hajj Latif Ssebagala claimed on Friday that the FDC is “beyond repair” and that the party is now doomed to the same fate as the Democratic Party (which had a major outflow of supporters to the NUP in 2020).
“Rather than expending energy and resources in attempting to regain control, the right thing to do is to acknowledge that the FDC chapter has closed and is beyond salvage,” said Ssebagala in a televised interview.
“Just like our efforts to mend the DP, which proved futile, they must recognize that their party is now finished. It has ceased to exist. The wisest course of action for those in Katonga is to admit that their party has been taken and join us to collectively strengthen our forces and plan the way forward,” He Said.
This week, Rtd Col. Besigye’s faction of the FDC held a parallel delegates’ conference where they elected Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago as President and Francis Mwijukye as Secretary General, succeeding Patrick Amuriat and Nathan Nandala Mafabi, respectively.
This marked the peak of the internal power struggle within the FDC.When Dr. Besigye, Chairman Wasswa Biriggwa, and Spokesperson Semujju Nganda accused the party leadership of accepting “dirty money” from President Yoweri Museveni in July, the long-simmering turmoil inside the FDC erupted.
Col. Besigye informed the media after this week’s delegate conference that they are attempting to retake the party’s headquarters in Najjanankumbi.
