Exclusive!! NUP MP Narrates How Bobi Wine Spent Shs. 340M To Bribe Voters In The Dokolo By-election, How Rubongoya Misled Bobi And NUP Came Last
During the Sunday broadcast of the NBS Eagle program, panelists disclosed, with moderator Adam Kungu’s approval, that Harriet Ageno, Bobi Wine’s candidate, received a mere 727 votes, yet the campaign expenditure totaled up to Shs340m.
This suggests an expenditure of roughly Shs500,000 per vote. The initial assertion surfaced from the prominent NUP rebel MP, Dr. Abed Bwanika, who expressed no astonishment over the limited 727 votes garnered by the NUP candidate.
However, he expressed bewilderment at the substantial expenditure, totaling Shs340m, incurred during the two-day excursion to Dokolo by the party leadership and their entourage. Bwanika contended that had Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya listened to his counsel provided in three clandestine meetings, the party’s lackluster performance in areas like Dokolo could have been alleviated.
Bwanika, who accused the Secretary General (SG) of deceiving people by posing as Rubongoya (nicknamed him Goberchev), revealed his real name as David Lewis Rukiri. He claimed to have driven to Kamwokya three times to demand facilitation for himself and other MPs to canvass support for NUP nationwide, but both Rubongoya and Bobi Wine disregarded him.
Bwanika announced his intention to release a comprehensive dossier this week, outlining the issues plaguing the once-popular NUP party.Mawogola South MP Gorette Namugga, a staunch supporter of Kyagulanyi, tacitly supported Bwanika’s claim about Bobi Wine’s expensive Dokolo trip, despite her reluctance to openly challenge him on his criticisms of the party.
Namugga remarked that Shs340m was relatively small compared to the campaign expenditures of NRM’s Gen YK Museveni.Bwanika’s assertion about the cost of Bobi Wine’s trip to Dokolo was supported by Mawogola South MP Gorette Namugga, though she hesitated to challenge him openly due to her allegiance to Kyagulanyi. Other panelists such as Mubarak Munyagwa, MP Mpindi Bumali, and MP Semwanga Gyavira echoed Abed Bwanika’s statements and commended his bravery in addressing internal issues within NUP.
The Kimanya-Kabonera MP vowed to persistently advocate for reform within the party. In the Dokolo election, where the well-funded NUP candidate lagged behind, other candidates performed significantly better. Sarah Aguti Nyangkori of UPC emerged victorious with 23,044 votes, followed by Janet Rose Adongo Elau Okello of NRM with 14,001 votes, and Dr. Austin Rosemary Alwoc of FDC with 8,168 votes.
Despite widespread voter apathy, a total of 97,693 voters were eligible to participate across Dokolo’s 173 polling stations. The sarcasm in Bwanika’s remarks regarding Kyagulanyi’s involvement should not be viewed in isolation.
It should be understood within the broader context of the ongoing factionalization within NUP, where supporters of Deputy President Mathias Mpuuga privately celebrated Harriet Ageno’s poor performance as indicative of waning public interest in “Bobi Wine-ism.”
