FIGHT FOR LIFE: MP Mwijukye Gets Brain Injury After Savage Beating During Church Land Wrangles, To Go Abroad for Further Treatment

Opposition MP Francis Mwijukye is expected to be flown out of the country for specialized treatment for severe head injuries.
According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, the Territorial Police in Greater Bushenyi and Buhweju CPS are investigating the circumstances surrounding Mwijukye’s attack and injury while responding to a land dispute on May 12, 2024, at Nyakishana Sub-county.
Enanga explained that Mwijukye, the Buhweju Constituency MP from the FDC party, had received a complaint from churchgoers at Rwanyamabare Catholic Church and members of Rwamabare Farmers Association, who claimed their church was at risk of being demolished by Frank Kamugisha, a neighbor with whom they were in dispute over the church land.
At the scene, Mwijukye was attacked by a rival group armed with sticks, resulting in serious head injuries. He was rushed to Nsiika Health Centre IV by police for medical treatment.
“The public should know that legislators are representatives of their constituents and shoulder the responsibility of Parliament. Therefore, any threats of violence against legislators are an attack on the core of our democracy. These acts of impunity against our legislators will not be tolerated,” warned Enanga.
It is understood that Mwijukye had arrived late for his Sunday appearance on a Radio West political talk show, where he discussed the land dispute in Buhweju and promised to return after the show. He was attacked and injured upon his return.
As Nsiika Health Centre IV was unable to handle his condition, Mwijukye was transferred to Divine Mercy Hospital and later to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. He is now set to be flown to Nairobi Hospital in Kenya for further treatment, according to reports.
During the parliamentary plenary on May 16, Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda requested Speaker Anita Among to explain what her office was doing to ensure Mwijukye received proper treatment and Makindye East legislator Derrick Nyeko, who was arrested for possessing UPDF attire, regained his freedom.
“Nyeko’s home was raided; I don’t know by which clan, but all the clans of security were there. At the time they raided his home, his wife was there and went through a traumatic experience. People asked a civilian to produce military attire. I want to request the Government to explain the steps taken since Mwijukye was attacked and his health,” submitted Ssemujju.
Speaker Among responded, “Hon. Mwijukye, since he got hurt in the brain, we have to send him for further medication and examination; it was really a bad one.”
MP Francis Mwijukye has previously survived death on several occasions, including accidents and suspected poisoning.
