“I Have Skin Cancer & Lung Infections – Dying Soon” NUP MP Ssegirinya Nearly Undresses In Court
Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya , has disclosed before the High Court’s International Crimes Division that he is suffering lung infections and skin cancer. Ssegirinya revealed this during his pretrial on terrorism-related accusations on Monday in front of Lady Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha.
He is accused of participating in machete killings that took place in the 2021 Masaka and Lwengo districts and resulted in over 20 fatalities and several injuries. He is concurrently charged with his Makindye West counterpart, Allan Ssewanyana, and four other individuals. Jackson Kanyike, John Mugerwa, Bull Wamala, and Mike Sserwadda are the other suspects. When the case was brought up for discussion, the prosecution, lead by Richard Birivumbuka, asked for a delay so that they could give the defense attorneys more prosecution evidence.
Ssegirinya responded by thanking the court for being understanding since he had missed two sessions. He also disclosed that he has hypertension, which periodically causes his blood pressure to soar to 200 over 140 in addition to skin cancer and lung infections. In order to monitor his health while he was in Uganda, he testified in court that when he sought treatment in the Netherlands, medical professionals placed a body monitoring device in his left arm.
He wanted to take off his clothes in front of the nation to make his point, but the court kept hearing him out.Ssegirinya further explained that doctors in the Netherlands advised him to return for a review on October 10, 2023. However, his lawyers recommended that he return to Uganda and attend court since he had missed two consecutive sessions. To substantiate his claims, Ssegirinya informed the court that he possessed relevant documentation, although it was not present in court, except for a letter from the Ambassador of Uganda to Belgium, which he showed to the Judge to read on his phone.
At this point, the Judge extended her best wishes for his quick recovery and adjourned the case until October 24, 2023. Earlier, Justice Komuhangi had dismissed an application by Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana, in which they sought to halt their trial pending the determination of a constitutional petition challenging the legality of the charges against them.
