Hon. Mathias Mpuuga has recently been the center of attention due to a rift with his party leadership over allegations of mishandling Shs500m, which the National Unity Platform (NUP) views as unlawful and contradictory to the party’s core principles.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of NUP met on Monday to address accusations of Corruption and Abuse of Office against Hon. Mathias Mpuuga. After careful deliberation, it was decided that unless Hon. Mpuuga provides a satisfactory written explanation within seven days, he would be removed from his position in the Parliamentary Commission.

This ultimatum was officially communicated to him on Tuesday. In a notice signed by Dr Lina Zedriga Walu, the acting party president, Hon. Mpuuga was urged to respond within seven days, failing which the NEC would make a decision regarding his recall from the Parliamentary Commission. This step was taken after earlier advice for him to step down voluntarily was disregarded. This ultimatum was officially conveyed to his office on Tuesday.

“At it’s sitting held on 4th March, 2024 (to which you were invited but did not attend), the National Executive Committee considered the serious accusations against you and resolved to ask you to show cause in writing, why you should not be recalled from the Parliamentary Commission, to which the Party Seconded you as a member. you are requested to respond with in Seven (7) days from the date of receipt of this notice to enable the National Executive Committee take an appropriate decision”- reads part the notice signed by Dr Lina Zedriga Walu to as acting party president.

The accusations against Hon. Mathias Mpuuga are grave and warrant thorough investigation. As a member of the Parliamentary Commission, his conduct is under scrutiny, and any allegations of misconduct must be addressed promptly and transparently to maintain the party’s integrity.

The NEC’s decision to recall Hon. Mpuuga if he fails to provide a satisfactory explanation within the given time frame demonstrates NUP’s commitment to accountability and ethical behavior. Upholding high standards of integrity is paramount for the party’s credibility and the democratic processes it participates in.

Hon. Mathias Mpuuga’s response to the NEC’s ultimatum will determine the course of action. Providing a satisfactory explanation may alleviate the need for further measures, but failure to do so could result in his recall from the Parliamentary Commission, reaffirming the party’s stance against corruption and misconduct.

In summary, the NEC’s decision to address the allegations against Hon. Mathias Mpuuga underscores NUP’s dedication to accountability and transparency. By taking this step, the party aims to maintain integrity within its leadership and uphold the trust of the public and its members.
