“It Was Always A Matter Of Time. Unfortunately, Our People Never Learn” Rubongoya Reacts As Former Prisoner Sanya Confesses To Forcibly Implicating Bobi Wine

National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has responded to a public apology made by former political prisoner Sanya Muhydin, who admitted to falsely accusing NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, under duress. Muhydin’s statement, marked by remorse, included a heartfelt plea for forgiveness from both Kyagulanyi and the Ugandan public.
Muhydin revealed that he was coerced into confessing to crimes he did not commit, as he was told it was the only way to secure his release from Luzira Prison. After his release, he was paraded before the media and forced to make statements tarnishing Kyagulanyi and the NUP, based on a confession made at the General Court Martial in Makindye. Muhydin was among 19 NUP supporters recently pardoned after spending nearly four years on remand on charges of treason and illegal possession of ammunition.
Reacting to Muhydin’s confession, Rubongoya remarked, “It was always a matter of time. Unfortunately, our people never learn.” His succinct comment underscored NUP’s ongoing criticism of what they describe as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s use of coercion and manipulation against political opponents.
The revelations have sparked renewed debate about the treatment of political prisoners in Uganda. Critics have accused the government of employing intimidation and forced confessions to silence opposition voices. NUP has consistently condemned these tactics, arguing that they undermine justice and democracy in the country.
