Katikiiro Mayiga Speaks Out On Taking Sides In The Bobi Wine – Mpuuga Feud , Is It True He Banned Bobi Wine From CBS FM – BBS TV
The ongoing rift between National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, and former Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP) Mathias Mpuuga, has taken a dramatic turn.
Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda, has categorically denied allegations of taking sides in the dispute. Mayiga’s statement comes amidst escalating tensions between Kyagulanyi and Mpuuga, fueled by corruption allegations in parliament and internal NUP conflicts.
The feud has spilled over onto social media, with supporters of both leaders engaging in heated exchanges. Kyagulanyi’s recent decision to suspend Mpuuga as Deputy President for Buganda has sparked speculation about Mayiga’s stance, given his long-standing friendship with Mpuuga.
However, Mayiga clarified that his relationship with Mpuuga does not imply favoritism.Addressing the claims, Mayiga firmly denied taking sides, emphasizing that both Kyagulanyi and Mpuuga are long-time friends.
“I know everyone is eager to know where I belong, because truth be told, the Katikkiro is a big person, but I don’t side with anyone,” Mayiga said during an appearance on Sanyuka TV.
Mayiga acknowledged his longstanding friendship with Mpuuga, which he suggested may have fueled perceptions of bias.
“Mpuuga and I are long-time friends; I even buried his father. When he entered elective politics in 2011, I advised him not to run against John Kawanga, but he didn’t listen. We’ve come a long way together,” he explained.
Mayiga also addressed concerns surrounding a service award given to four parliamentary commissioners, including Mpuuga. He dismissed the controversy, emphasizing that the award was Parliament-approved and that the focus should shift to Uganda’s large number of MPs.
Additionally, Mayiga denied allegations of influencing CBS FM and BBS Terefayina’s decision not to host Kyagulanyi. These claims have mostly been spread by NUP loyalists on social media.
However, Mayiga has denied the allegations, explaining that he does not influence decisions at CBS Radio and its sister agencies. He said CBS has both editorial and management boards that are responsible for selecting panelists for different shows.
“That’s not true. I don’t decide who appears on Buganda Kingdom’s radio and television stations. The managers choose who to host, depending on the situation at the time. We give these companies independence to operate, and CBS has editorial and management boards that run its operations,” he said in an interview with Sanyuka TV’s Adam Kungu.
Mayiga added that as the Prime Minister, his role is to encourage management to prioritize Buganda’s issues, matters of development, and youth, while giving equal opportunities to those needing coverage.
