Liberation Day!! See How Bobi Wine NUP Supporters Were Reportedly Abducted And Tortured As NRM Celebrated 38 Years
Ugandan opposition leader and musician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Alias Bobi Wine has accused the security forces of abducting and brutalizing some of his supporters during a screening of his documentary on Friday.
In a tweet, Bobi Wine stated that the military and police attacked and kidnapped Namutosi Sandra and Namagembe Aisha in front of Kampala Kolping Hotel⁸, a budget-friendly hotel in the capital, as they were heading to the party headquarters in Kavule. He also mentioned that Muwanga Owen was abducted around Lubigi as he headed home. He added that their whereabouts remain unknown.
“Yesterday, while we screened the #BobiWineThePeoplesPresident documentary showcasing the Museveni regime’s brutality, the military and police yet again abducted some of our people, and brutalized others. Military men moving in a drone brutally attacked and abducted Namutosi Sandra and Namagembe Aisha in front of Kampala Kolping Hotel as they were heading to the party headquarters in Kavule. Muwanga Owen was also abducted around Lubigi as he headed home. Their whereabouts remain unknown!” Bobi Wine Tweeted.
The documentary, titled “Bobi Wine: The People’s President”³, was produced by National Geographic and features the life and political journey of Bobi Wine, who challenged President Yoweri Museveni in the January 2021 election. The film also exposes the human rights violations and electoral fraud that marred the polls, which Museveni won with 58.6% of the vote, according to the official results. Bobi Wine, who got 34.8%, rejected the outcome and claimed that he had evidence of rigging and intimidation.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, which emerged as the largest opposition force in parliament with 61 seats. He has been a vocal critic of Museveni, who has been in power since 1986 and is accused of being autocratic and corrupt.
Bobi Wine has also inspired many young Ugandans with his music and message of change. However, Bobi Wine and his supporters have faced constant harassment and violence from the security forces, who have accused them of inciting riots and violating COVID-19 restrictions. Dozens of people were killed and hundreds arrested during the campaign period, and Bobi Wine was placed under house arrest for 11 days after the election. He was later allowed to travel abroad, where he told the world through the documentary what happened in the election. He was arrested again upon his return to Uganda on October 5, 2023.
The Ugandan government has not yet commented on the latest allegations of abduction and brutality by Bobi Wine. The US and the EU have condemned the human rights abuses and called for an independent investigation into the election irregularities.
However, Museveni has dismissed the criticism as foreign interference and defended his legitimacy. He has also vowed to crush any attempts to destabilize the country.
