Masaka People Want Mathias Mpuuga’s LoP Convoy Retained To Avoid Humiliations
Led by Ntale Namuguzi from the Nasser-Nkrumah faction, known for managing printing tasks for Mpuuga-affiliated institutions in Kampala and Masaka, supporters of the recently ousted leader of the opposition have appealed to Speaker Anita Among.
Their request is for the dismissed and demoted Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator to retain his extensive convoy to avoid any sense of humiliation.Having been replaced by Joel Ssenyonyi Besekezi as the leader of the opposition in parliament last week, Mpuuga’s removal sparked extensive debates, with his backers, led by personal assistant Joseph Kasirye of Kirimya-Bisanje, resisting the decision.
Kasirye contends that Mpuuga’s removal has adversely impacted the struggle for change led by Bobi Wine. On WhatsApp groups, supporters have urged Mpuuga not to succumb to intimidation from the Kamwokya group, instead advising him to maintain a significant presence in Ugandan politics.
Some have suggested accepting Anita Among’s offer to retain his convoy while Parliament procures a new one for Joel Ssenyonyi, whom the speaker is determined to pamper with perks, similar to the treatment bestowed upon Honorable Mathias. The ousted LoP remains committed to a lavish lifestyle, evident in the establishment of his law firm, Mpuuga & Co Advocates, managed by former journalist turned lawyer and university lecturer Suleiman Kareire, formerly associated with the Observer newspaper.
Supporters emphasize the importance of allowing Mpuuga to keep his convoy, citing potential threats from political adversaries such as supporters of Masaka lord councilor Alice Nvannungi, Mayor Flora Namayanja, and Babirye Kabanda. Tensions with Muwanga Kivumbi’s supporters, including Gorette Namuga, have escalated, and there is discord with Betty Nambooze of Mukono.
Concerned about Mpuuga’s safety, supporters urge Parliament to provide ongoing protection, akin to former speakers. Plans are underway for a grand homecoming procession to demonstrate Mpuuga’s enduring influence and send a message to Bobi Wine about the potential political consequences if Mpuuga is not handled judiciously in the lead-up to 2026.
