MP Ssemujju Nganda Unleashes Fury on Minister Tumwebaze: “Dress Like A Leader In Parliament, Not a Cow Herder!”
Whether it’s his choice of fashion or he was told by his doctor not to put on suits while going to parliament, Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda didn’t mince his words on the floor of parliament while roasting a top Museveni minister.
There was a heated exchange of English words as Ssemuju went bare knuckle with Agriculture Minister Frank Kajiji Tumwebaze over his choice of fashion while going to parliament.
According to Ssemujju the minister appears to parliament as if he’s going to milk his cows unlike his fellow ministers who show up smartly dressed.Ssemujju Nganda, the MP for Kira Municipality, called out Minister of Agriculture Frank Tumwebaze for his consistent disregard of the official dress code mandated for Members of Parliament.
While addressing the session, Ssemujju pointed out the contrast between Tumwebaze and his fellow ministers, who were dressed sharply in formal attire.
“If you look at the front bench, from where Hamson Obua is seated, you can see smartly dressed Ministers, and I want to commend them, but Frank Tumwebaze has made it a point to come to Parliament as if he is going to milk cows. All the Ministers, see how they are dressed. If Tumwebaze doesn’t respect Parliament, at least he should respect colleagues. Is he in order, to come to Parliament to transact official Government business dressed as if he is going to milk his cows?” asked Ssemujju.
Ssemujju urged Tumwebaze to show respect not only for the Parliament but also for his colleagues by adhering to the established dress code.In response to the criticism, Tumwebaze defended his choice of attire, describing his shirt as a traditional African garment.
“I fought hard to amend the rules to provide for other forms of dressing. I won partially. African-wear was allowed. However, the definition of it is what isn’t clear,” Tumwebaze explained.
As the country navigates its cultural heritage and modernization, leaders like Tumwebaze are pushing for greater flexibility and inclusivity in the way they dress. The exchange has sparked discussions on the importance of dress code compliance among public officials, highlighting the broader implications of professionalism in governmental settings.
As the debate continues, observers are left to ponder the role of attire in conveying respect and authority within the halls of Parliament.
