Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has called a crisis meeting with some members of the Authority executive to demand termination of the a contract awarded to the UPDF’s Special Forces Command (FDC) to fix potholes on the streets of Kampala.

The Lord Mayor does not believe that the military engineering unit has the expertise and the equipment needed for the job.

“We want the SFC out of Kampala,” the Lord Mayor charged at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

“Lt. Kikomeko go back to the barracks; Muhoozi take back your men out of our city. The best you can do is to go handle our borders which are ravaged by insecurity. That is your area of expertise.”

Lukwago was speaking in light of the Shs. 2billion contract which was given to the SFC’s Construction Regiment to fill 19,324 square metres (approximately 3 kms) of the potholes in the central division.

Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s advisor on special operations on Tuesday afternoon toured the ongoing works in city.He was accompanied by SFC engineers led by Lt Kikomeko Kigongo, the assistant project manager, and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director, Dorothy Kisaka.

However, Lord Mayor Lukwago at the press conference expressed pessimism about preparedness of the SFC to take on such work.

“They have no capacity; they have no equipment, we don’t even know how many engineers they have,” Lukwago said.

“They are just hoodwinking Ugandans; putting up a smokescreen that something is happening.”

The Lord Mayor says he called an crisis meeting with Eng David Luyimbazi the KCCA Deputy Director, to have him account for the Shs 250billion allocated to the city road repairs, and to explain the KCCA involvement.
