NUP Kagabo’s Meeting With Museveni Angers NRM MPs, Leaves Party Divided

Bukoto South Member of Parliament, Twaha Kagabo’s decision has deeply divided legislators from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
While some welcome his meeting with President Museveni, others argue it undermines Uganda’s democracy.Kagabo, known for his close ties with First Son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is affiliated with the Bobi Wine-led National Unity Platform.
Despite this, he attended the NRM parliamentary caucus at State House Entebbe last week, sparking controversy. He defended his meeting with President Museveni, asserting that it is a privilege for any MP or politician to meet the President and clarified that he has not switched allegiance from the opposition to NRM.
However, NRM MPs like Dokolo South MP Felix Okot Ogong expressed concern, warning that opposition MPs joining NRM could harm Uganda’s democracy and go against the principles of multiparty democracy.
“I don’t like people who betray their own system. You have to be straight because you are in a multiparty dispensation. You have to serve the nation. When in opposition, you have to come out with a clear policy statement to do what Ugandans will benefit,” Ogong emphasized.
Arua Central MP, Mr. Jackson Atima, interpreted Kagabo’s move as evidence of NUP’s declining popularity and eventual phase-out.
