The National Unity Platform (NUP) last week issued an ultimatum of seven days to Mathias Mpuuga, the former leader of the Opposition, to defend himself or step down from the position of Parliamentary Commissioner.

Mpuuga has been accused of receiving a “good service award” of Shs500 million from Parliament, leading to allegations of corruption and abuse of office.Recently, the NUP requested Mpuuga, who is also the deputy president of the Buganda region, to resign from his role as parliamentary commissioner.

Mpuuga, however, said last week that he would not resign from his position, arguing that the party’s advice was based on falsehoods and a misinterpretation of facts. He denied the allegations of fraudulently receiving the Shs500 million ‘service award’ from Parliament. According to Mpuuga, the money was legally allocated to him by a commission in his capacity as the Leader of the Opposition, following the necessary parliamentary procedures.

“To call any such payments corruption is the highest level of spite, double standards, and deliberate misrepresentation to the public and membership of the Party on a purely selfish mission,” he stated.

But the leader of NUP, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, insisted that Mpuuga had admitted to wrongdoing and apologised for corruption and abuse of office during a meeting with party leaders. Kyagulanyi challenged Mpuuga to explain what he had given in exchange for the Shs500 million awards, stating that it involved negotiation and ‘give and take.’

In a statement last week, the deputy party of NUP in Western region, Zedriga, expressed concern over the corruption scandal involving Mpuuga and the mismanagement of public affairs by the leadership of the Parliament of Uganda. Zedriga stated that Mpuuga admitted his involvement in the matter during a party meeting on February 28, 2024, as well as publicly.

She emphasized that such actions were illegal, immoral, and contrary to the principles and objectives of the National Unity Platform. The purpose of this response is to enable the National Executive Committee to make an informed decision regarding Mpuuga’s position as a member of the Parliamentary Commission. It has now been revealed that NUP is now looking at Sacking Mpuuga as the NUP Party Vice President In Buganda Region however it’s remains uncertain on who may replace Mpuuga.

Among the names looked at is Alhajj Ali Mulyanyama, the Makindye Division Mayor, Hon Betty Nambooze (Mukono Municipality MP), Hon Francis Zaake (Mityana Municipality MP), Matia Lwanga Bwanika (Wakiso District Chairperson) among others. However many sources inside NUP have intimidated to this website on why Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Alias Bobi Wine and the NEC Committee may look at Alhajj Ali Mulyanyama as the possible successor of Mpuuga.

Alhajj Ali Mulyanyama, the Makindye Division mayor whose name is now being floated as a potential successor to Mpuuga. A man of unwavering faith and towering presence, Mulyanyama’s credentials were as impressive as they were diverse.First and foremost, Mulyanyama is a devout Muslim, known for his vocal advocacy within the Kibuli and Nakasero sects.

His commitment to his faith is not merely confined to the confines of the mosque; rather, it permeated every aspect of his life, including his political endeavors. It is Mulyanyama who  extended the hand of friendship to the NUP Party Secretary General, Lewis Rubongoya, inviting him to contribute to the Ummah fundraising event at Nakasero—a gesture that spoke volumes about his inclusive leadership style.

Mulyanyama’s appeal extends far beyond the confines of his religious community. His stature and reputation within the Buganda Kingdom is formidable, forged through years of experience and a genuine rapport with the leadership at Mengo. His ability to navigate the intricate nuances of Buganda’s political landscape has  earned him both admiration and respect, making him a natural choice to represent the interests of the region within the NUP.

In the tumultuous lead-up to the 2021 general elections, it was Mulyanyama who boldly declared Bobi Wine as a presidential candidate—a decision that came with its fair share of risks. Yet, undeterred by the potential repercussions, Mulyanyama stood firm in his convictions, putting the interests of the party above his own personal safety.Indeed, loyalty is a hallmark of Mulyanyama’s character—a quality that endeared him to the leadership of the NUP.

His unwavering commitment to the party’s cause is evident in his active participation in its daily activities, from grassroots mobilization efforts to high-level strategy sessions. In times of uncertainty and doubt, Mulyanyama emerges as a steadfast anchor, providing much-needed stability and cohesion to the party’s ranks. But perhaps most importantly, Mulyanyama is viewed as a unifying force within the NUP—a bridge between the Muslim community and the broader Buganda populace.

His ability to mend connections and build alliances across religious and cultural divides makes him an invaluable asset to the party, capable of rallying support from diverse constituencies.

Reflecting on his journey within the NUP, Mulyanyama’s thoughts drifts back to the pivotal moment in 2017 when Bobi Wine had embarked on his quest for political office. As the aspiring Kyadondo East MP, Bobi Wine had faced formidable opposition, yet Mulyanyama had been there every step of the way, lending his unwavering support and solidarity to the cause.

Mulyanyama is also one of the NUP leaders who have openly come out to condemn the acts of torture and abductions on the NUP supporters and has been at the core of speaking against all sorts of human rights violations.

Now, as the specter of leadership change looms large, Mulyanyama finds himself at the center of attention once again. The prospect of assuming the role of vice president of the Buganda sub-region was both daunting and exhilarating, presenting him with an opportunity to further his commitment to the ideals of the NUP.The NUP NEC will tomorrow sit to decide on the fate of Mpuuga as the nation eagerly awaits the Successor.
