“Opposition MPs Are Hypocrites! They Abuse the NRM Gov’t But Happily Take Monthly Salaries From It, If We’re So Bad, Reject The Money” Says Museveni
President Yoweri Museveni has sharply criticized opposition Members of Parliament (MPs), accusing them of hypocrisy for accepting government salaries while routinely condemning the ruling administration.

Speaking recently, Museveni questioned the integrity of opposition MPs who, despite frequently attacking the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government, continue to draw monthly salaries from the state.
“If the opposition truly believes that the NRM government is so terrible, why do they continue to accept salaries funded by it?” he asked. “You can’t insult the hand that feeds you and still expect it to give you more,” he added.
The President’s comments follow ongoing criticism from opposition lawmakers, who have accused the NRM of corruption, poor governance, and failing to deliver essential services. Museveni pushed back, calling out what he described as a clear contradiction in their actions.
He emphasized that the funds used to pay all MPs—including those in the opposition—come from the national budget managed by his government. “If you are convinced that our leadership is unjust, reject the money and stand by your convictions,” he challenged.
Museveni’s remarks have sparked debate among Ugandans. Some agree that opposition MPs should take a principled stand if they believe the government is failing. Others argue that accepting a salary does not mean endorsing the government, pointing out that MPs are elected to represent their constituents, regardless of their party affiliation.
The President’s statement has added fuel to the ongoing political tension between the ruling party and opposition figures. Whether any opposition MPs will take action in response remains to be seen—but Museveni’s message has certainly reignited public discourse.
