Please Forgive Us!! Top Museveni Minister Apologizes To Bobi Wine Over The Airport Arrest
The National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, has received an apologies from Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, Minister of Internal Affairs, following the recent incident on Thursday at Entebbe International Airport.
When Kyagulanyi arrived at the scene of the incident, security officers posing as airport employees quickly took him into custody in order to thwart his supporters’ planned march from Entebbe.
However, Minister Otafiire insists that the action was taken with great attention for Kyagulanyi’s human rights and that it was carried out to secure his delivery safely to his home in Magere, Wakiso district, without harming anyone.Otafiire expressed his regrets and apologized to those who were harmed by the operation in response to concerns aired by a journalist on a local radio station on the treatment of Kyagulanyi and the reporters covering his return.
He defended the operation as being required to stop potential rioting, stampedes, and other incidents that would have led to casualties, especially among supporters.Although Kyagulanyi could be unhappy with how the situation was handled, the operation ultimately averted a more serious catastrophe, the Minister conceded.Otafiire continued by praising the security personnel for how they handled the circumstance, noting that past encounters between Kyagulanyi and security personnel had led to fatalities.
He added that the operation safeguarded the interests of common people whose businesses the planned march may have affected.A number of leaders and followers were detained in relation to the Police’s earlier cautions against big gatherings to welcome Kyagulanyi back to the nation.
Regarding the mistreatment of journalists during the incident, Otafiire refrained from condemning their treatment, but several human rights organizations have strongly criticized the actions of the security personnel. These organizations have called for an investigation into the conduct of the operatives involved in the mistreatment of journalists.
The Human Rights Network for Journalists Uganda, in particular, condemned the continuous violation of journalists’ human rights and called for a thorough investigation into the actions of the security personnel.
