Power Struggle!! Museveni Shocked As 200 NRM MPs Apply For 3 Parliamentary Commissioner Jobs
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, also the National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson, was taken aback when informed by Hamson Obua, the Government Chief Whip in parliament, that over 200 party legislators vied for the three parliamentary slots.
State House sources shared with the Kampala Eye that Museveni, noting the substantial number of applicants, used the opportunity to caution the public that parliament lacks the financial resources many presumed.Insiders revealed that Museveni, inquiring why numerous legislators sought these roles, was told by Obua that a significant number of them were disheartened.
According to Obua, frustrated legislators claimed they spent considerable funds on elections, hoping to recoup through their parliamentary seats. However, failing to achieve this, they now see occupying parliamentary leadership offices as an alternative.
Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi, the NRM Vice Chairperson in charge of Buganda, stated that President Museveni would soon convene the party’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), to assess applications and select three names for submission to Annet Anita Among as the new party representatives on the parliamentary commission. Additionally, they would pick MPs to chair the parliamentary committee aligned with the ruling party.
Presently, NRM representatives on the parliamentary commission are Bukhooli Central MP Solomon Silwany, Rubanda Woman MP Prossy Akampurira, and Zombo Woman MP Esther Afayochan. Dissatisfaction among NRM legislators arose over Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka’s interpretation that they cannot elect their parliamentary commissioners and committee chairperson, contradicting the last Kyankwanzi NRM retreat agreement and the country’s constitution.
Sources indicated that after NRM alters the party’s parliamentary leadership, Museveni plans to announce a cabinet reshuffle. There’s a likelihood that ministers involved in the iron sheet scandal will be replaced, allowing them to focus on their defense at the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court.
The opposition appointed Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, the former Leader of Opposition, to represent them on the parliamentary commission, succeeding Mityana Municipality’s Francis Butebi Zaake.
