Outraged citizens in Uganda have taken to social media to demand the immediate arrest of Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, following the exposure of her extravagant spending habits, which have cost taxpayers billions of shillings.

Activists recently unveiled documents detailing Among’s exorbitant expenditures, revealing that she averages around Shs 400 million per week. Shockingly, between February 8, 2023, and April 17, 2023, Daniel Adilo, a parliamentary staff member, received a staggering Shs 2 billion for the Speaker’s activities, many of which appear to be personal in nature.

For instance, on June 13, 2023, Adilo withdrew Shs 130 million on behalf of Among for ‘garments’ supposedly for the Speaker’s outreach activities in Eastern Uganda. Furthermore, on July 24, 2023, Among received an advance of Shs 750 million for a ‘community empowerment workshop’ in Bukedea, where she serves as a Woman MP.

These revelations of scandalous expenditure have surfaced at a time when Ugandans are grappling with the economic aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, facing heavy taxation to fund national budgets and repay the country’s debts.

“As citizens, we have failed our country,” said Benjamin Katana, a prominent city lawyer and human rights activist.

“This theft is part of a bigger criminal enterprise that only collective action by citizens can stop, but most of us are waiting for a messiah to liberate us,” he added.

He added: “The sad part is that most of us who are busy explaining away this impunity and insulting whoever is putting in effort to expose it need functional public health facilities, functional public schools unlike the ones we are trying to shield who can afford treatment abroad, etc.”

The Inspector General of Government, Beti Kamya, has confirmed the initiation of an investigation into the alleged malpractices within Parliament, prompted by petitions from concerned citizens and whistleblowers.

Meanwhile, social change activist Angella Namatta has called for Among’s impeachment to facilitate a thorough investigation into her conduct, echoing the sentiments of many who view the situation as a national tragedy.

“The Speaker should be impeached to facilitate in-depth investigations into her conduct.” She Said.

Daniel Kawuma, an opposition activist, raised concerns about the political will to combat corruption and hold those responsible accountable, particularly among the ruling NRM officials.

Innocent Nahabwe, analyzing the financial documents, highlighted Among’s extravagant spending, emphasizing the staggering amounts involved, which far exceed budget allocations for crucial sectors like agriculture.

Calls for action on social media have intensified, with demands for the arrest of the Speaker and accountability for her actions. Discussions regarding the impeachment process and the role of the ruling party in ensuring justice have also gained momentum.

Amidst mounting public outrage, questions linger about the Speaker’s accountability and the government’s response to these allegations.
