“Thank You My President Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba” ‘Corrupt’ MP Micheal Mawanda Speaks Out After Being Granted Bail

In a landmark decision, the Anti-Corruption Court in Uganda has granted bail to legislators Michael Mawanda and Paul Akamba, pending their trial in a high-profile corruption case that has captivated the nation.
The two MPs, along with city lawyer Julius Kirya Taitankoko, were released on Friday under stringent conditions, marking a significant development in the case that has sparked widespread attention and controversy.
The case, which involves allegations of corruption related to cooperative war loss compensation, has seen the accused face charges of embezzling a staggering Shs7 billion. Mawanda, who represents Igara East, and Akamba, representing Busiki County, were arrested in June and have been in custody since then, fueling speculation and debate about their involvement in the scandal.
The bail conditions, set by Judge Jane Kajuga, are stringent, requiring a cash bail of Shs35 million for each accused, a non-cash bond of Shs50 million for their sureties, and the surrender of their passports to the court.
Additionally, they must report to the court registry every two weeks and refrain from interfering with witnesses or ongoing investigations. Judge Kajuga emphasized that the decision was made in line with the constitutional rights of the accused while ensuring that justice is served, warning that any violation of the bail conditions could result in its revocation.
The case has sparked controversy, with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, criticizing Mawanda’s arrest and charges on social media. Kainerugaba claimed that Mawanda was being persecuted for supporting him, sparking a heated debate about the motivations behind the arrest.
Despite the charges, Mawanda vowed not to refrain from his actions, stating, “I will start from where I stopped.I Thank my President Gen Muhoozi For standing with me all this time”
His remarks have left the public and authorities puzzled, sparking debates about his intentions – whether he plans to continue his alleged activities or pursue a different course.Mawanda’s arrest has been mired in controversy, with General Muhoozi Kainerugaba claiming that he was arrested due to his support for Muhoozi’s purported presidential ambitions.
The trial is set to begin in November, and the accused face serious charges that could result in significant penalties if convicted. The case has highlighted concerns about corruption and accountability in Uganda, and its outcome is being closely watched by the public and civil society organizations.
