Lillian Aber’s Early Life
Lillian Aber was born in Kitgum and raised by a single mother. She is a sister to Loum Janani and a mother of two children. She went to Holy Rosary Primary School and later joined Peace Primary School after her mother got involved in an accident and could not afford her school fees.
Due to the long distance between the school and home, her mother took her and her brother to Kasubi Army Primary School where she completed her primary education. Her grandmother then took her to the Late Rev Oketayot who offered her a scholarship to join Issoke Memorial College in Kitgum.
She met the late Mr. Lazarus Ocira whom she later got married to at a young age.Aber dropped out of school in senior three due to a teenage pregnancy and she gave birth to her first child at the age of seventeen.Mr. Lazarus Ocira took her back to school at Old Kampala Secondary School after she had delivered and she was able to complete her secondary education here.
Meanwhile, Lillian had all along been interested in leadership roles. She was appointed as the class prefect in Primary three, and she competed for the position of head girl in Primary six and Senior three. In 2012, she enrolled at Makerere University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Communication at the School of Humanities and Literature. She then got a Master of Public Administration and Management from Makerere University and a Master of Business Administration in Oil and Gas from Uganda Christian University.
In her first year at Makerere University, Lillian Aber ran for GRC and was appointed Information Minister in the government of HE Adeke Anna Ebaju. She mustered the courage to run for Guild president in 2014, but given the dynamic, a male leader was more desired than replacing a lady with a lady. HE Bowwe Ivan, the elected guild president then, appointed her as his Vice Guild President.
This led to the beginning of her involvement in national politics.Lillian Aber successfully ran for President of the Uganda National Student’s Association in 2015 making her the first female President.
Aber’s Husband Dies
Lilian Aber, the woman MP of Kitgum district has had quite a roller-coaster of a life. One tragic one is the tragic loss of her husband. The MP while appearing on NBS TV’s People and Power said that her husband succumbed to cancer. This was one of the most trying moments for her. It happened at a time when she was heading into campaigns.
This was for the presidency of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA).However, she had to quickly put this behind her as she didn’t want to dwell on it much. Her voters however couldn’t fathom what she had been through. However, she used this as her strength and stood firm.
“My husband died of cancer; I knew how it would end so I did not want to waste much time dwelling on it. I did not want to give up the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) elections. I got the car and my children and came back to Kampala and started campaigns. My voters could not tell what I had been through. That was my strength.”
Meanwhile the NRM aligning MP revealed how her husband had sent her back to school after she gave birth.Unfortunately, during one school term, she got pregnant but didn’t know how because she had been using contraceptives all along. Since she couldn’t go back to school, she decided to concentrate and read from home.
“I went back to Old Kampala Senior Secondary School, and everything was going well until I got pregnant in the second term. I don’t know how it happened. And I was taking contraceptives and taking my doses properly. I knew I could not go back to school, so I decided to sit and read at home. I collected notes, pamphlets, and past papers from my friends.”
Recently, Aber courted public controversy when she was pictured in official UPDF uniform against the military law. At a time so many Opposition supporters are said to be languishing in jail over their party berets and such, Aber’s gaffe was costly.
Being in the dining table, she got away with it. She would still have gotten away with it because where some unleash their newfound status to defend their wrongs, Aber coils and leaves the dust to settle.
In 2023, Aber was appointed by Muhoozi as his National Vice Chairperson of the then MK Movement for Northern Uganda and member of the central committee.MK Movement has evolved into Patriotic League Uganda that vaguely goes around as neither a political grouping nor a pressure one. The mother of two who remains single but her steps are getting bigger.
