“The Only Kenyan Who Is Right At This Moment Is Ruto, If He Needs Any Assistance, UPDF Will Provide Him” Gen Muhoozi Breaks Silence, Leaves Kenyans Angry

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and a senior military leader, has stirred significant controversy after expressing public support for Kenyan President William Ruto. In a social media post, Muhoozi described Ruto as the only Kenyan leader he currently supports and offered military assistance from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) should Ruto require it.

The comments quickly drew backlash from many Kenyans, who viewed the statement as an inappropriate and unwelcome interference in Kenya’s internal affairs—particularly at a time when President Ruto is facing mounting public criticism and widespread protests.

While Muhoozi’s remarks appeared to be an attempt to show solidarity with Ruto, they instead sparked anger and skepticism. Critics accused him of overstepping diplomatic norms and ignoring pressing political and governance issues within Uganda, including concerns over political freedoms and a lack of leadership transition.

Kenyans on social media were swift to respond, asserting Kenya’s status as a sovereign democracy where leaders are elected by the people—not endorsed or supported by foreign militaries. Many emphasized that leadership in Kenya is earned through merit and public trust, not family legacy or military influence.

Political commentators also weighed in, noting that Muhoozi often uses language that reflects monarchical or dynastic aspirations—something that contrasts sharply with Kenya’s democratic culture. While such rhetoric may resonate within Uganda’s political environment, where one family has held power for nearly four decades, it clashes with Kenyan values that reject authoritarianism and inherited rule.

Muhoozi’s offer of military assistance was particularly controversial, with many interpreting it as a veiled threat to Kenya’s sovereignty. Observers described the gesture as tone-deaf and outdated, especially in a region where respect for democratic institutions and non-interference is critical.

Ultimately, Muhoozi’s comments appeared to have the opposite of their intended effect. Rather than strengthening support for President Ruto, they triggered widespread criticism and reinforced Kenyan citizens’ commitment to defending their democratic processes and national independence.

For many in Kenya, the message was clear: the country values its democratic principles and has no place for foreign intervention or dynastic overreach. As one commentator put it, “Kenya is a democracy, not a monarchy—and it doesn’t need a king.”
