Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, and the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has announced his intent to contest Uganda’s presidency in the 2026 elections, pending his party’s endorsement.

Speaking from his residence in Magere, Wakiso district, Kyagulanyi expressed readiness to challenge President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni or any candidate the ruling party may field. His declaration sets the stage for another intense electoral season following their contentious 2021 presidential contest.

During a media interaction, Kyagulanyi addressed various issues, emphasizing his party’s commitment to addressing national challenges and engaging with voters. He reiterated his dedication to the democratic process and voiced confidence in representing Ugandans eager for change.

“I am ready to challenge Museveni or any candidate his party fronts,” Kyagulanyi stated.

Reconciliation and Party Unity

On potential reconciliation with former NUP deputy president Mathias Mpuuga, now aligned with the Democratic Alliance, and even President Museveni, Kyagulanyi stressed that such efforts must align with justice and democratic principles. While NUP prioritizes accountability, reconciliation remains conditional.

Kyagulanyi dismissed rumors of divisions within NUP, attributing them to external forces. “There are no factions in NUP. Some individuals pretending to represent NUP are merely imposters used by the regime to sow discord,” he asserted.

He further criticized those who left NUP for alleged corruption or betrayal, emphasizing that the party remains unified and focused.

Addressing recent comments by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba advocating for police to shut down meetings critical of the first family, Kyagulanyi described such statements as reckless and unlawful.

“In a functional country, Muhoozi would face immediate consequences for such inflammatory remarks. This reflects the dysfunction under Museveni’s leadership, where the law is subverted,” he remarked.

Kyagulanyi advised Museveni to seek rehabilitation for his son, highlighting the dangers posed by unchecked.

Kyagulanyi condemned the regime’s treatment of political prisoners, urging them not to admit guilt for crimes they didn’t commit. He acknowledged the harsh conditions in prison but reaffirmed support for prisoners regardless of their decisions.

He also demanded accountability for 18 missing individuals, accusing the government of suppressing their existence despite public evidence. “We continue to demand their return, whether alive or deceased. Their families deserve closure,” he stated.

Kyagulanyi attributed divisions within opposition parties to Museveni’s “divide-and-rule” tactics, funded by taxpayers’ money. While acknowledging the regime’s attempts to infiltrate NUP, he reaffirmed the party’s commitment to unity and resilience.

He expressed openness to forming a coalition with groups dedicated to democratic change, stating, “We are ready to join hands with anyone committed to ending Museveni’s dictatorship and building a new Uganda.”

As an artist himself, Kyagulanyi criticized the regime for stifling creativity and using money to suppress dissent. He pointed out the unfairness of distributing Shs 30 billion to artistes without clear guidelines, reducing many to mere pawns.

“When someone pays you off, you lose your independence. This reflects the broader corruption and manipulation under Museveni,” he said.

Kyagulanyi emphasized NUP’s principled stance on governance, accountability, and anti-corruption. He left the door open for reconciliation with defectors and even Museveni under strict conditions, such as returning misused public funds and apologizing to Ugandans.

“Our focus remains on building a just and democratic Uganda,” he concluded.
