VIDEO!! When Former LoP Mathias Mpuuga Was Caught In The Lodge With A Married Woman, Shot In The Leg
On October 12, 2010, at La Nova Hotel in Soweto Village, now part of Masaka City, a dramatic incident unfolded involving the former Leader of the Opposition and embattled parliamentary Commissioner, Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba. Mpuuga narrowly escaped a potentially fatal encounter when he was shot in the leg by a man. This followed a confrontation over a woman they were both involved with, reminiscent of the traditional delicacy, ‘nsenene’.
The chaotic scene erupted when John Ssempiira, a former Masaka internal auditor and CMI operative, discovered Mpuuga in a hotel room with his wife, Harriet Ndagire, who was also the mother of his then 3-year-old daughter.
The two were engaged in intimate sessions after a day of campaigning.Mpuuga was in the midst of a campaign to secure a seat in the August House, aiming to represent Masaka Municipality for the first time, following his previous roles as a minister and representative in the Buganda Parliament’s Lukiiko. Despite Masaka’s elevation to city status, he continued to represent the Nyengo-Mukungwe division.
At the time of the shooting, Mpuuga, associated with the Suubi Group, was in a heated electoral contest against John Baptist Kawanga of the Democratic Party, as well as Francis Kiiza of the NRM, Suzan Nakawuki, and Sande Mutesasira.Ssempiira later informed the police that he had received a tip-off about his wife’s rendezvous with Mpuuga at the hotel.
Pretending to book a room for the night, he searched the premises until he found his wife and Mpuuga together in Room 20, engaged in conversation and singing praises to the politician. After the shooting, Ssempiira and his wife rushed Mpuuga to Masaka Hospital for immediate medical attention, before Ndagire drove him to Lubaga Hospital in Kampala for further treatment.
The incident quickly took on political dimensions, with Mpuuga himself characterizing it as such while speaking to the media from his hospital bed. His chief campaigner, Lauben Mulindwa, who happened to be Ndagire’s father, denounced it as a smear campaign against his relative and candidate.
Mulindwa went as far as to threaten legal action against the police, arguing that Ndagire and Ssempiira were not married and had separated, thus absolving Mpuuga of any wrongdoing in pursuing a relationship with her.
Police, in their statement to the media, clarified that the shooting stemmed from a private affair rather than political motives, attributing it to the ongoing tensions between Mpuuga and Ssempiira over their involvement with the same woman.
Speaking to Media, police explained and attributed the shooting a woman the men Mpuuga and Ssempiira were b*nking tubeless.
“I want refute allegations that this is political, there’s nothing political. It’s an issue to do with a private affair. After shooting, Ssepiira and the wife took him to Masaka hospital together”-said Taban Cheriga the then Masaka CID Boss.
Despite the tumultuous events, the shooting incident seemed to work in Mpuuga’s favor, as he secured a resounding victory in the subsequent election, solidifying his political standing and trajectory. Since then, he has remained a prominent figure in Masaka’s political landscape.
