President Museveni has broken his silence on the issue of missing Ugandans. This is especially opposition supporters allegedly arrested by security agencies.

While responding to a question during a media engagement at State House in Entebbe, Museveni said the arrests are illegal and should be condemned by everyone.

“Those arrests are illegal . Arresting individuals without taking them to court is illegal and unacceptable. Anyone detained must be brought before court within 48 hours,” the president said.

The issue of missing Ugandans has been a sticky one since the 2021 general election. The opposition has for all these years accused security agencies of arresting and detaining supporters from opponent political parties. This is especially the National Unity Platform and detain them with trial.

The issue reached a new level this year when opposition MPs boycotted parliamentary sittings until government issues a comprehensive statement about the matter. The MPs only returned to parliament after government had promised to issue a statement on the matter.Speaking on Friday, President Museveni said where arresting and detaining Ugandans beyond the mandatory 48 hours is illegal, is it not right for opposition to run to NGOs for assistance.

“It turned out that these pro-opposition groups when there is an issue, they go to NGOs to report the state.  If someone is missing, report to police station not NGO. The NGO or whites won’t save you here. This is republic of Uganda. Let it be on record and if action is not taken, we know who to blame. The arrests are illegal but use democratic structures to expose,” Museveni said.

The President listed the other things which must be priority for every Ugandan as opposed to his retirement date to include amplifying wealth creation programs and the fight against corruption.

On wealth creation, he singled out State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama (whose Kakumiro home he recently visited) and said he had perfectly replicated his four-acre model in Kakumiro to the extent that he currently earns Shs55m per month from the various farming activities effected on just 4 acres of land.

The President also demanded that the media becomes very deliberate in amplifying the fight against corruption and wealth creation using their respective platforms
