Who Wants To Kill LoP Ssenyonyi ? Speaker Anita Among Finally Speaks Out – Says Ssenyonyi Was Drunk
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has dismissed concerns about assassination attempts on Leader of Opposition (LOP) Joel Ssenyonyi, asserting that there’s no reason for anyone to want to end his life.
This response followed a concern raised by Peter Mugema, MP for Iganga Municipality, on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Mugema informed Parliament that he had heard the LOP claim his life was in danger and that there were assassination attempts being planned against him.
LOP Joel Ssenyonyi mentioned on Tuesday that he faced intimidation for exposing corruption and claimed there were plans to end his life through staged accidents.
“We shall not remain silent. They have threatened us in various ways; they are planning accidents for us. Our God protects us, and we will not be silent,” he said.
“This is a message to those planning these schemes: all your plans are in vain.”Ssenyonyi made these remarks as his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), welcomed new members at its headquarters in Makerere Kavule on Tuesday.
However, Speaker Among dismissed the death threats, urging the LOP to report to the police if his life was truly in danger
.“Let’s not play to the gallery. If there is an assassination attempt, go report it to the police. Who can assassinate someone and for what reason? Let’s avoid making such claims,” she said.
Among suggested that if the concerns were raised in a bar, it might explain why some people might have been under the influence of alcohol.
“If that was said in a bar, maybe some people had been drinking. In my opinion, these matters shouldn’t even be brought up here because we don’t assassinate people. No one is important enough for us to resort to assassination,” she added.
LOP Joel Ssenyonyi has been popular for exposing corruption in the government, gaining recognition during his tenure as chairman of COSASE when he highlighted issues at Uganda Airlines.
He continues to receive praise for speaking out against the misuse of public funds in Parliament, notably for criticizing Speaker Among and the Parliamentary Commission for awarding his predecessor Mathias Mpuuga UGX 500 million for his services.
