I Sent UGX 1,000,000 to the Wrong Mobile Money Number and the Person Refused to Return the Money. This is What I Did

I have never felt as desperate as I did when a man by the name Joshua received my money and refused to return it. I had a patient at Mulago Hospital, and she was scheduled to be discharged on Thursday.

I had just received my salary and thought it was wise to deny myself luxuries so I could clear the bill for my ailing sister. My brother was waiting for the money at the hospital in Kampala, so I jotted down his number and sent UGX 1,000,000 to that mobile number.

After two minutes, I called the number to confirm whether he had received the money, only for a stranger to pick up the call.

When I double-checked the number, I realized it wasn’t my brother’s.

I had mistakenly keyed in the last two digits as 27 instead of 37.

I started to panic and immediately called the man, asking him to return the money. But he refused, saying, “kiendacho kwa mganga hakirudi” (what goes to the healer does not return).

In a desperate move, I called MTN Uganda, and they promised to reverse the transaction, which gave me a slight sense of relief.

Unfortunately, my sister was forced to stay at the hospital since her bill hadn’t been cleared.

The following day, I called MTN again, only to be told that the person had already withdrawn the money and switched off his phone.

Since I had no other options, I went to plead with the hospital management to release my sister, promising to clear the bill, but all my attempts were in vain.

I was completely confused and stressed out, and I called all my relatives for help, but none of them were in a position to assist me.

It wasn’t until my cousin gave me advice on a sure way out of the situation that things started to change.
