Richard Arinaitwe is a name that many won’t ever forget. This man was not from a poor family. Richard Arinaitwe’s parents live in Kololo, an upscale city suburb, and it is in their house that Arinaitwe, who claims he was on an assignment to kill, hid after committing crime.

Richard Arinaitwe was arrested in July 1998 following an attack and subsequent murder of Goetz who had come to Uganda to follow up on the utilisation of HIV/AIDS funds. On arrest, Arinaitwe was taken to Buganda Road court to record an extrajudicial statement meant to have him confess taking part in the murder.

Like the norm is, the suspect was led to the Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Alividza’s chambers and everyone including the guards were asked to excuse themselves. The suspect used the opportunity to turn against the magistrate, grabbing a bungle from her hand that he used to try strangling her. It took the intervention of the magistrate’s bodyguard who heard the scuffle.

Arinaitwe was later charged with Goetz’s murder and attempted murder on chief magistrate, Elizabeth Alividza and her bodyguard. The police detectives also discovered that Arinaitwe was among the gang that was killing people in hotels and stealing their properties. In the High Court, he was convicted of murder and later sentenced to death.

In 2006, the Supreme Court ruled that all death row inmates who had not been executed after five years prison would have their sentences reduced to life in prison which is equal to 20 years. The detectives discovered shocking exhibits from Arinaitwe’s room in Kololo including crime novels written by James Hardly Chase and James Bond films.

The senior members of the gang were locked up in Luzira while Arinaitwe as a juvenile was sent to Kampiringisa for rehabilitation. When police searched his room at his father’s house in Kololo, they discovered a string of crime novels among which were James Hardly Chase, James Bond films among others.

Police watched the movies to try and read into Richard Arinaitwe’s mind and found them to be horrific.Police also recovered a calendar from Richard Arinaitwe’s room and found that on July 28, 1998 the day the Cecilia Maria Goetz was murdered and drew a picture of a skull and two bones crossing similar to the one usually seen on electricity poles and marked it ‘Kabi Danger Hatari.’
