A 24-year-old clinical officer has been arrested after dramatically confessing during a church service that he killed a woman in a Kabale lodge.

The suspect, Clinton Mwesiime, who works at Hamurwa Health Centre IV in Rubanda District and resides in Mitooma District, was arrested on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at a church in Nakawa, Kampala. According to witnesses, Mwesiime asked the congregation to pray for him before shocking them with a confession that he had murdered 45-year-old Leonada Kobusingye.

Police say Kobusingye, a resident of Hataaba Village in Rubanda District, was found dead on July 30, 2025, at Cheers Pub and Accommodation in Kabale Municipality. She had sustained four stab wounds to her chest and abdomen.

Investigations revealed that Kobusingye checked into the lodge the previous night under the alias Allen Orishaba. She was accompanied by a man who identified himself as Julius, and the pair claimed to have travelled from Katuna, a border town between Uganda and Rwanda.

The body was discovered the following morning, around 9:51 a.m., by a lodge attendant during routine cleaning. At the scene, police recovered a knife believed to be the murder weapon, an unused HIV/syphilis testing kit, and a syringe.

According to police spokesperson Elly Maate, Mwesiime was initially detained at Jinja Road Police Station before being transferred to Kabale, where the crime occurred. During interrogation, Mwesiime allegedly admitted that he killed Kobusingye because she had become pregnant, refused to have an abortion, and pressured him into marriage. He reportedly told police he feared social stigma over marrying an older woman and grew furious after discovering she was HIV positive.

Authorities confirmed that Mwesiime will be charged in court once investigations are finalized.
