The political scene in Uganda has once again been thrown into turmoil after Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Nakawa East aspirant, publicly named the person he believes is behind his recent arrest. Waiswa, a close ally of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, made the revelation shortly after appearing in a Kawempe court.

According to Waiswa, his arrest was not a routine security operation but a politically motivated action. He accused Micheal Kabaziguruka, the Electoral Commission chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), of orchestrating his violent detention earlier this week.

Waiswa claims that security operatives picked him up as he attended a court session where Bobi Wine’s bodyguards were seeking bail. He said the arrest was carried out with extreme force, leaving him traumatized and convinced that it was a deliberate attempt to silence him.

Speaking out for the first time since the incident, Waiswa revealed that during his detention, he was threatened and pressured to stop supporting Bobi Wine. He says this demonstrates that his loyalty to Kyagulanyi has made him a direct target.

Waiswa also stated that he is being accused of participating in an illegal military-style parade at the NUP headquarters in Makerere-Kavule. The alleged event was reportedly inspected by Bobi Wine himself, giving security forces grounds to charge Waiswa and other party members.

His allegations have sparked heated debates within opposition circles. Claims of betrayal by a senior opposition figure have shocked many and raised questions about divisions and mistrust among Uganda’s main opposition groups.

As the case unfolds, NUP supporters are rallying behind Waiswa, demanding his release and justice. The incident highlights the intense pressure facing Bobi Wine’s camp while exposing growing tensions within Uganda’s opposition politics ahead of the 2026 general elections.
